Social Policy & Social Justice
|
Social work practice does not occur in a vacuum. Social work practice derives its model from policy, research and theory. This course SOWK 632 was an opener to me. This course enabled me to examine social welfare and its related policies within the context of social justice. The course also provided the opportunity for policy analysis and how it impacts on the individual and community. During my practicum with United Way, I had the opportunity question how immigration policies of the Canadian government has oppressed such people classified as temporary residents and as a result have been denied basic survival rights based on the fact that the term immigrant is socially constructed in Canada. This was at an immigrant serving agency review with board members, agency staff as well as staff and volunteers of United Way. This course gave me the opportunity to challenge some policies that oppress international students.
